JOPHON Courses offer continuing education created from JOPHON, APHON’s acclaimed journal. These courses feature original, peer-reviewed research aimed at enhancing clinical nursing care for children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders, and their families.
This course discusses a research article by Horwood et al. (2023) that examines the psychological effects of cancer diagnoses on adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors. It highlights the impact of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) on mental health, noting that negative illness perceptions are linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression. The article identifies the need for interventions to improve illness perceptions, which may help mitigate FCR and associated mental health issues in this population.
  • To describe the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis on the mental health of the adolescent and young adult (AYA) population
  • To discuss how fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) impacts mental health in the AYA population.
  • To discuss what the finding suggests for improving illness perception.
  • To identify how the overall illness perceptions predict depression and anxiety.
