The session presented by Dr. Belinda N Mandrell focused on developing a photobiomodulation (PBM) program to prevent and treat oral mucositis in pediatric oncology patients. The program was initiated following a clinical trial that demonstrated PBM's efficacy, leading to its inclusion in supportive care guidelines. A dedicated PBM therapy team was formed, enhancing patient referral rates, with 324 patients treated since 2021. The program received institutional recognition for its clinical care improvement, emphasizing the importance of PBM in managing oral mucositis among high-risk pediatric patients.

• Understand the efficacy of PBM – Learn how photobiomodulation (PBM) effectively prevents and reduces oral mucositis in children undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT).
• Recognize key components of PBM program implementation – Identify the essential elements of establishing a PBM program, including staff training, protocol development, and patient care integration.
• Assess the impact of PBM in clinical practice – Evaluate the program’s success through patient outcomes, expansion to high-risk groups, and recognition with a Clinical Care Improvement Award.

APHON will provide 1.0 nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) contact hour(s) for the successful completion of this session. Successful completion requires attendance for the entire session and completion of the post-session evaluation. 

The Association for Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This provider is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 14513. 

This program content has been reviewed by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) and is acceptable for recertification points. You may claim 1.0 ILNA in one of the following categories:
