The Transplant Foundations course is designed to teach nurses learners how to care for pediatric transplant patients at their institution. This course emphasizes:

• Core foundational concepts that are required before learning specific institutional practices
• A multi-disciplinary team approach and plan of care
• Providing psycho-social support and education for patients, parents and family members about what to do/expect during their care

This course is meant to be paired with classroom training about institutional-specific pediatric transplant practices. Providing these online modules reduces the nurse educator preparation time and time in the classroom.

This course is written for the following target audiences.

• Novice nurses with limited pediatric clinical experience and no stem cell transplant experience.
• Experienced nurses who don’t have hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant (BMT), or pediatric experience. These nurses may know adult stem cell transplant, but have not cared for pediatric patients.
• Nurse Practitioners who may have some experience, but not extensive transplant experience.

After completing the Transplant Foundations course, the nurse will be able to:

• Identify and define the types and source of transplants
• Identify indications for transplants and ethical considerations
• Identify the types of conditioning regimens for BMT and their potential adverse effects
• Administer and manage cellular therapy infusions
• Conduct assessments specific to pediatric BMT patients
• Manage symptoms as needed and required (pain, mucositis, nausea, vomiting, skin integrity, etc.)
• Recognize the complications for each type of transplant regardless of donor source or conditioning regimen
  • In the event of an emergency, immediately intervene
  • For non-emergencies, notify/escalate to the appropriate provider who should intervene
• Describe post-transplantation immune re-constitution and late effects after BMT
• Plan for safe discharge including home and follow-up care
• Maintain professional boundaries and care for self
• Care for an initial, small cohort, less complicated stem cell patient

The APHON Foundations of Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, 3rd Edition (“APHON Foundations Courses”), including copyright therein, are owned exclusively by APHON and may not be used except for the limited license as provided below. APHON grants Purchaser of the APHON Foundations Courses a limited license to use the APHON Foundations Courses in a classroom setting and for the individual Purchaser’s independent study.

Without limiting the specific nature of the license above, APHON only grants Purchaser the permission to use the APHON Foundations Courses to teach employees in Purchaser’s institution in an in-person or virtual instruction setting. The APHON Foundations Courses may not be loaded into Purchaser’s or their institution’s learning management system, and Purchaser may not create any derivative works of the APHON Foundations Courses, including any modifications, recorded voiceovers, or other additions or changes to the APHON Foundations Courses. Purchaser may place the PowerPoint^® slides contained within the APHON Foundations Courses exactly in their original form on the institution’s shared network to allow central access within the institution only. Purchaser may print the presenter notes and slide handouts within the APHON Foundations Courses for use in conjunction with instruction within Purchaser’s institution.

Purchaser may offer continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours by working with an ANCC-accredited approver of CNE contact hours. APHON does not grant CNE contact hours for completion of the course material within Purchaser’s institution. Purchasers that are affiliated with an ANCC-accredited provider of CNE contact hours may also provide CNE contact hours for completion of the course material within the Purchaser’s institution.

All other use of the APHON Foundations Courses is expressly prohibited.
