Pdf Summary
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited condition your child is born with. It is not contagious and cannot be spread to others. Because it runs in families, other relatives may have SCD or sickle cell trait.

A key step is establishing ongoing care with a Pediatric Hematologist (a doctor specializing in children’s blood disorders). Regular follow-up visits—typically every 3 to 6 months, or as directed—are important to monitor your child’s health, provide screenings, and adjust treatment as needed. Your child should also stay up to date on all recommended childhood vaccines.

Medical knowledge and treatment options for SCD have improved greatly over the past decades. While SCD remains serious, many medicines and strategies can help keep your child healthy and support an active life. It is important to give all prescribed medications exactly as instructed and to attend all scheduled appointments and screenings.

To prevent severe infections, your child will take daily antibiotics until age five. Even with antibiotics, fever is an emergency concern in SCD: you should report any fever immediately, and your child will likely need to be evaluated promptly in an emergency room or clinic.

Pain episodes can occur with SCD. You will be taught how to use pain medications at home safely and what to do if they do not control the pain. You will also learn common pain triggers such as illness, temperature changes, dehydration, and altitude changes. Sometimes stronger pain medicine given through an IV in a hospital or clinic is necessary.

You will receive important contact information for your medical team and emergency after-hours instructions. Keep these numbers visible and accessible. Your child’s hematology team often follows them into late adolescence and helps guide long-term care, including discussing new treatments and possible clinical trials.
