Video Summary
This session explored the implementation of a virtual nurse role in an inpatient pediatric hematology-oncology transplant and cellular therapy unit at Nemours Children’s Hospital. The presenters explained how the role was developed to support bedside nurses with admissions, discharge education, documentation, patient/family teaching, and dual-signing high-alert medications and infusions. The team used Care AI cameras, Epic workflows, and staff training to launch the model. Results showed reduced nursing workload, improved documentation, better completion of education and infection-prevention bundles, faster discharge processes, and higher patient/family experience scores, especially among Spanish-speaking families. Staff feedback was positive, highlighting reduced stress, mentorship support, and improved efficiency. The team also discussed challenges, including initial hesitation, questions about staffing models, cost, insurance, and whether virtual nursing should count in HPPD. They concluded that virtual nursing has become a valuable part of care delivery and is expanding to other roles and sites.
